so she had the world
a collaboration of new poems and paintings done by artists Susan Solomon

Not Betrayal

Nothing in the world is betraying us.
Not the late spring, not the gray days,
Not the wonderful liars in office,
Not the friends who broke our hearts.
Nothing in our easy lives
Works against us, not the river
Carrying its burden of uprooted trees,
And the ghosts of those who had to let go
Of the bridge railings, not the families
Who can’t see us clearly, not the mirrors
We try to avoid, those shiny truth tellers.
It’s pretty bad, those days when we see
There’s no betrayal anywhere, and
It’s simply more days, more nights,
And what we plan to do with them.
